The great thing about the BSC’s largest co-op, Rochdale Village, is that it has the best of both worlds. As one of 259 co-op members in this apartment complex, you can mingle at parties, get together in the common room, or just chat with fellow students while doing your laundry. On the other hand, if it’s peace and quiet you seek, you can retreat back to your private room for some crucial study time.

Rochdale is the most diverse co-op in the BSC, where people from a wide range of ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds work and live together. Many Rochdalians are extremely active on campus, advocating anything from social justice issues to the environment. In the end, Rochdale is one of the most affordable places to live in Berkeley with low rent and utilities included (except phone). Oh yeah, and did we mention the tasty BBQs in our backyard, Davis Park? No wonder we love our co-op!

Only UC Berkeley students are eligible to live in Rochdale during the Fall and Spring.

Fenwick is also known for its diverse community and its relaxed social environment. There are many social events and workshift parties where members can get to know their neighbors and create community. For that and many other reasons, BSC members choose to live in Fenwick.

Previous Residents Testimonial

As a low-income, Chicana transfer student from Compton, CA, UC Berkeley was a very different environment from where I come from, including the student population. Stepping foot on campus, there were not many students that looked like me. However, when I first stepped into the Fenwick Apartments, I instantly met BIPOC students from similar backgrounds. Living at Fenwick has also empowered me with community-building skills through the many social events they host at Davis Park. These events have allowed me to network and build relationships with other brilliant UC Berkeley students. I utilized their study and common rooms to host meetings and study sessions for organizations I was a part of alongside colleagues and friends.

When I first got accepted to UC Berkeley, I was denied housing as a transfer student. Finding reliable and affordable housing close to campus was rigid. I had to move three times to different locations before I got here to my home in Fenwick. As a low-income student, the best part of the Co-op system is affordable housing. The BSC Co-ops can provide students who don’t come from privileged backgrounds, like me, a place to live affordably while simultaneously building community. Fenwick continued to help me as a low-income and traditionally marginalized student by providing me with their Fenwick scholarship, which gave me rent credit that would reduce my rent payments and alleviate my financial stress by allowing me to focus on my studies. When I first got accepted to UC Berkeley, I was denied housing as a transfer student. Finding reliable and affordable housing close to campus was tough. I had to move three times to different locations before I got here to my home in Fenwick, where I live comfortably and in community.

After living in the dorms freshman year and then a studio apartment sophomore year, I finally found a community to call home my junior year at the Rochdale community. This community has bought me great friendships, knowledge, and support throughout the past semesters. Since the pandemic, my ability to reach deadlines and finances was affected, but BSC has always been helpful and aided its members. Specifically, the BSC personnel continues to work to improve our living and enforce safety. I have found a great sense of involvement within the BSC and am thankful for the community I get to call home.
