Blownshifts
What happens when your requirements are incomplete?
Blownshifts are penalties given to residents for any of the following reasons:
No Shows to Workshift Slot
If you sign up for a workshift slot in advance, but do not show up, you will receive 1 blown shift. This is as we have a limited amount of workshift slots, and by not showing up, an opportunity to do workshift was taken from another member who needed/wanted to complete their hours.
Failure to cancel your booking in advance of the 24 hours will result in a blownshift.
A cancellation cannot be made within 24 hours of booking, your workshift slot will remain on our workshift system and the resident will receive a blown shift if they do not show up.
Workshift Violations
A workshift violation is when a resident has engaged in inappropriate behavior during their workshift slot. These include, but are not limited to:
Leaving in the middle of a workshift for an extended period of time without notifying the staff.
Depending on the circumstances and the staff managing workshift that day, this may result in a blown shift, the revocation of your workshift hours that day, or both.
If you are caught on your phone during your workshift.
Depending on the circumstances and the staff managing workshift that day, this may result in a blown shift, a 15 minute deduction in the time you complete, or both.
Missed Workshift Deadlines
If you do not complete the amount of hours required by the deadline, you will receive blown shifts per hour missed. Missed workshift hours and blown shifts can be made up, but must be completed by the final workshift deadline of the same academic contract period.
SUMMER 2021: Hours will double for workshift that was not complete for the last workshift deadline.
Uncooperative Blown Shifts
For all policy violations, Management will issue warnings for the first offense. Failure to abide by the policy on the second offense will result in a blown shift. Note, this does not apply to policy violations that result in an Uncooperative Fine, which is a $75 monetary fine posted to your BSC account. This will be discussed in the next section.
For example, if Management becomes aware that residents are smoking inside their unit, they will issue an email warning. If the residents continue to violate the smoking policy, they will receive a blown shift.
In an extended example, if Management becomes aware that there is an unidentified unit on a floor that has violated the smoking policy, the entire floor can accrue blown shifts until the unit is identified.
Habitability Inspections
As stated in the NMO presentation, we will be subject to Habitability Inspections throughout the semester by the Central Office. We will be conducting pre-inspection checks to prepare for these inspections. During this time, residents may receive emails to correct habitability violations.
For example, you may receive an email asking you to remove a doormat outside your unit door, or remove trash from outside your door, or remove furniture in the balcony/patio of your unit, as these all constitute habitability hazards, and subsequently, violations in the inspection.
If these violations are not corrected after our email warning, residents of the unit, floor, or building, could be given a blown shift.
